Oberammergau, in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, is famous for its woodcarvings and the Passion Play that takes place there every ten years and involves a cast of thousands, literally, from the local village. The village is pretty with "Lüftlmalerei" (frescoes) adorning many houses, but the Kolbensattel ski area is rather limited except for beginners and undemanding intermediates. For a winter break, however, the whole area is very pleasant with access to other small ski areas in the region, a substantial Christmas market, 100km of cross-country ski routes, winter walking trails as far as Linderhof Palace and even opportunities for ski touring beyond the pistes. Opposite the main ski area is an area reached by a tiny cable car to Germany's steepest freeride ski route "Nordhang".
The main ski area is just a few hundred metres from the station.
