Altenmarkt im Pongau is a pleasant town in the heart of the loose collection of resorts in the Salzburger Sportwelt section of the Ski Amade circuit, and is home to Atomic skis. Although there is skiing on the edge of Altenmarkt the 20 km piste is probably only any good for beginners and people wanting easy, pleasant pistes. Nearby Zauchensee offers more variety with almost 90 km of varied pistes for all levels.
The best place to alight by train is Radstadt, from where you can walk to the lifts in about 20 minutes. It takes about 1 hr 20 mins to get here from Salzburg, sometimes with a change at Bischhofshopen. There is a very irregular service that stops at Altenmarkt itself. A free bus with an infrequent timetable connects the stations and lifts at Zauchensee, Radstadt and Alpenmarkt.
