Ski Wengen by Train

162 km of piste between 1274-2320m

Truly one of the world's greatest and oldest winter sports destinations underneath the mighty Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. The legendary mountain railways make this car-free village one of the most accessible resorts to get to, and the range of skiing, snowboarding and winter walking options is huge.  It is not possible to get from Mürren or access the First areas from Wengen but there is a cable car to the Männlichen area between Grindelwald and Wengen and also a train to Kleine-Scheidegg to ski the legendary Lauberhorn, the setting for the toughest and most famous ski race in the world. The ski school is located opposite the railway station and the beginners slopes are conveniently located a hundred metres away, next to the Männlichen cable car.

Best of the Slopes at Wengen

The Lauberhorn is a legendary race but, essentially, the rest of the season it is a run anyone can take. Not as tough for a cruise as it is as a race, it does have the steep (but avoidable) Zielschuss section towards the end.

Where to Eat and Party in Wengen

With fabulous views of the Eiger, lunch at the Hotel Jungfrau at Wengernalp (+41 33 855 16 22) is an expensive but essential treat - one of the best mountain restaurants in the world. The station buffet at Kleine Scheidegg is good value and good grub, and the Tipirama wigwam there gets lively late afternoon. The Start Bar on the Lauberhorn is good too. In Wengen there is the Tanne bar, Eiger Bar and Crystal bar and the Hasenstall in the Silberhorn carries on late. The Rocks bar is a small English-run bar which shows live sports including premier league football. Sina's pub also has a deserved reputation for good value food. More refined, with the GaultMillau points to prove it are Restaurant Chez Meyer’s at Regina (+41 33 856 58 58 ) and Restaurant 1903 at Hotel Schönegg (+41 33 855 34 22).

Getting to Wengen by Train

The best destination to access the downhill slopes by public transport in this ski area is Lauterbrunnen. Get lift pass at Lauterbrunnen, then take mountain railway to Kleine Scheidegg or alight at Wengen for Männlichen cable car (5 minutes walk).
